When he reappears Rocky disappeared and arrived home Ryan met his originally dying lying, suffering from Alzheimer's grandfather Randolph, which acts very much alive, however. Even Ryan held for the first time since the accident back to words. Only gradually clears up the fact that Ryan is caught by the fall in a parallel world, and every person sees the world so, as it was at the time when she came into it. Ryan learns a girl named Melanie know, for it is always winter and it is therefore clothed with a thick coat. Ryan takes you to the " dust factory", which is led by the ring master and his two mimes Hope and Sorrow.

In the dust factory have all the " Plug -heart " the ability to " jump", that is, to be offset by a stunt on a trapeze from the trapeze catcher. Those who are caught may "continue" ( interestingly, these people die in the real world ), while the falling to dust when they touch the circus ground, thus alive to return to their world. Melanie is strongly rejecting jumping out and so it is for Ryan extended period of time is not an issue.

When Ryan grandfather Randolph told that grandmother has died, decides this to organize a funeral. At the funeral, the ring master Ryan attacks, but is distributed by grandfather Randolph.

On an outing with Ryan and Melanie's grandfather Randolph in his car, grandfather Randolph Ryan tries to remember that his family needs him, but Melanie reacted angrily on it, since it has been found in Ryan 's friend, to which they in this world has always had been waiting for, and so they promoted and Ryan leaves by means of a vortex in the dust factory. There she enters angrily into the dust heap, after which the ground breaking away from under the feet of the children and they are pulled by black, slimy tentacles into the world of the ring master. There must be those who have trampled on the dust heap, demonstrate self-confidence to get out fed long again. Ryan, who has not done this, however, is carried out again.

After a conversation with his grandfather decides this, that he has already dallied too long and now the time had come for him to jump. By a white Nebelschwade he passes directly into the dust factory, Ryan, who wants to follow him, but ends up in the closet of his room. He runs to walk to the dust factory, but is prevented by a train because mitanzusehen what happens to his grandfather. When he arrives in the dust factory, it is empty and when he sees a pile of dust in the ring, he concludes that his grandfather did not make it. This time he is the one who crushes the dust heap and again he is drawn into the world of the ring master.

Ryan calls him out, and after he won he wants with Melanie, who still is in captivity of the ring master, back up in the parallel world. However, Mel has enough confidence in himself to go to Ryan, because she knows that she should long jump and she is afraid of every decision. Ryan, however, you come meet halfway and they will create return it together.

Once at home Ryan expects him a crowd that celebrates the successful leap of his grandfather. For Ryan, it is now to take the plunge and at the time and he waves in the Dust Factory, where he says goodbye to Melanie. It looks as if he makes the leap, but he slides off and sprayed on the ground.

Melanie, who has now lost her only friend in this world, ceases to believe it and it will be covered, as they re always on the frozen lake ice runs for them, suddenly into the water.

Ryan re-emerged from the lake, into which he has fallen at the beginning of the story, and his friend Rocky rushes to his aid. He has been at the fall of the bridge broke a leg and after the hospital stay he stands with his mother together on their front porch. They concealed Ryan, however, that his grandfather has died. A car pulls up and out of it rises the daughter of neighbors, it turns out that it's Melanie, who had fought for her life for quite some time due to an aneurysm in the hospital.

With crutches Ryan meets with Rocky Melanie on the rotten bridge and they get to know again. Together they run the bridge along and although the two can not remember each other, seems already to blossom their friendship anew.

Interpretation

In The Dust Factory all three protagonists are on the threshold of death. This threshold is symbolized by the world of Dust Factory. The Dust Factory so is the decision possibility for man to fight for his own life ( Paradoxically, the people who do not make the jump, those who did not die ). This is clear from several examples:

  • Grandpa Randolph decides to take the plunge only after he learns of the death of his wife. Keeps him nothing more in the world of the living. It is therefore more than ready for the transition into death, which is also the statement of the trapeze catcher proves ( " He could have kept me if I had only had stumps instead of arms ").
  • Ryan is still very unsettled by his father's death on his jump, which is symbolized by the very close outcome of this jump. Ultimately, he decides for life and comes across the same moment about the death of his father, which leads him into the real world again for speaking (he has spoken in the Dust Factory though, but he can not remember ).
  • Melanie recognizes by Ryan that the real world something has in store for them, to which she has been waiting for. Through his friendship with Ryan, it creates it jump over their own shadows.

Reviews

" A serious, but not brooding youth film that explores the fears of growing up and points out that only lived life - even with its downsides - makes sense. Sensitively photographed, played convincingly. "
