The Egyptian

Sinuhe the Egyptian is a historical novel by Finnish writer Mika Waltari from the year 1945. The German language translation of Charlotte Lilius first appeared in 1950 under the title Sinuhe the Egyptian. Novel. 15 books from the life of the physician Sinuhe about 1390 to 1335 BC, at the same time the German publishing Toth (Hamburg) and the Swiss Linden -Verlag (Bern). This transfer has since been used for all German editions.

Content

On the narrative level the adventurous life of the Egyptian physician Sinuhe is portrayed in the years 1390-1335 BC. At the time of Pharaoh Akhenaton Sinuhe initially acts as a personal physician to the royal court. Later several journeys lead him to Babylon, Crete and in other regions of the then known world.

Background

With its worldwide success Waltari is a broad cultural and social history of pre-Christian Orient succeeded. It was preceded by extensive historical studies. Recognition has also found among Egyptologists of this novel.

Waltari has been excited about his work with The Story of Sinuhe. This ancient Egyptian text, which is considered one of the oldest literary works, dates from the time Pharaoh Amenemhet I, the founder of the 12th Dynasty ( 20th century BC).
