The End of Something

The End of Something ( Original title: The End of Something ) is a short story by the American writer Ernest Hemingway, the first time in 1925 in the anthology appeared in our time.

Hemingway tells of his alter ego, Nick Adams, who in the text breaks up with his girlfriend Marjorie. The end of the human relationship is also symbolically tells the decline of the sawmill in Hortons Bay.

Action

The first section tells the story of the collapse of the sawmill in Hortons Bay, which once dominated the place, so there was no place in the city, from where you could not hear the saws. One day there was, however, no more tree trunks and were transported across the river from the machine. The narrator reported that they had removed everything that had made the mill to mill and Hortons Bay a town.

Ten years later, Nick Adams is fishing with his girlfriend Marjorie on the lake. No fish are biting on, not even when they try to go fishing with bass trout. Finally, pull up on the beach to the camp fire back, but Nick resigned and admits that it is no longer fun. Nick accuses her of always knowing everything, and to her question whether that love makes no fun anymore, he answers clearly in the negative. Marjorie leaves by boat the scene, while Nick is left alone and is visited by a friend named Bill who had apparently known about Nick's intentions separation. Nick but now wants to be alone, which is why Bill looks at the fishing rods.

Analysis

In the text, there are many reasons for the low- gone love between Nick and Marjorie. The sawmill, which came down because of lack of raw material, the fish that did not anbissen while fishing, and Nick numbness throughout the trip. They all point to one end of love. The title therefore refers to two ends: that of Hortons Bay as a great trading city and the relationship of Nick and Marjorie.

In the short story, a man decides to prefer the company of another man to share than with a girl. Nick emphasized again and again that it is no longer fun. Absolutely nothing more.

Creation and reception

Hemingway wrote The End of Something in March 1924; the short story was first published in 1925 in his anthology In our time. F. Scott Fitzgerald called the history of anything fundamentally new. The entire anthology was very well received by critics and readers.
