The eruption of Mount St. Helens volcano on May 18, 1980, documented with footage of eyewitnesses. In addition, the landscape at Mount St. Helens and its environment is shown before the catastrophic eruption, as well as the devastation afterwards.

In 1981 the film was nominated in the category of Best Short Documentary Oscar.
Background
The film still came in 1980, both in the IMAX format, such as combine as 35mm film in cinemas and was the current interest with the still new, powerful image format. Narrator of the film was Robert Foxworth.
Photo locations were, among others, the amateur photographer Gary Rosenquist. In addition to photo and film shoots animations and special effects were used. These were made by Sean MacLeod Phillips and William Powlowski.
