Background

McCartney wrote The Fool on the Hill in 1967 at his father's house in Liverpool. He was inspired by the public's perception of the Maharishi. The Beatles biographer Hunter Davies reported that McCartney the song for the first time John Lennon was playing, as they composed just With a Little Help from My Friends.

Recording

On September 6, 1967 McCartney took a first demo version without the participation of the other Beatles on the piano. This version was released in 1996 as part of the Anthology series.

The Beatles recorded The Fool on the Hill in 1967 at Abbey Road Studios in London. Producer was George Martin, who was assisted by Ken Scott. On September 25, 1967, the band recorded three takes of the song. At this time, the song was still dominated by two harmonicas, who played George Harrison and John Lennon. This first version also appeared in 1996 as part of the Anthology series. On September 26, 1967 majority of the recordings were discarded from the day before. Instead, piano, guitar, drums, bass and vocals in the overdub process have been added.

The last recordings took place on 20 October 1967. The three flutists Jack Ellory and the Christopher and Richard Taylor brothers played a composed by McCartney and George Martin arrangement.

The Fool on the Hill released in the UK on 8 December 1967, the double -EP Magical Mystery Tour. Just two weeks before the song was released in the U.S. on the album Magical Mystery Tour. For the television film Magical Mystery Tour McCartney turned in France a movie to the song, which shows him in the morning light on a hill.

Cover versions

The cover version by Sérgio Mendes was reached in 1968 # 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, the version of Shirley Bassey in 1970 placed itself at number 48 on the UK Singles Charts.
