The Goldwyn Follies is a U.S. movie musical from 1938 by George Marshall.

Action

To the dismay of film producer Oliver Merlin whose latest film coincides with the temperamental Russian dancer Olga Samara by both critics and audiences. Oliver learns that people complain about the lack of a human face. When Oliver with Olga takes the next movie in attack, he hears the criticism of two women, Hazel Dawes and her friend Ada, with in a love scene. Oliver follows Hazel and convinces her to work for him as an advisor on the film project. It will show Oliver what the simple moviegoers really want to see.

The initially confused with Oliver Hazel goes to Hollywood. With the actress Glory Wood she shares an apartment. Oliver asks Hazel, up to Glory to forget all the actors to work as unbiased can. Despite all measures to avoid contact with people who are involved in the film, learns Hazel know the Ritz brothers who work as an animal trainer. Oliver and Hazel watch the samples of Ballets at a jazz interpretation of Romeo and Juliet. Hazel wants to retain the scene, but she wants to incorporate a happy ending. The premiere took place in Miami on January 28, 1938.

Guest appearances had the U.S. comedy group Ritz Brothers, the ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, the ballet of the New York Metropolitan Opera, the musical director of the film Alfred Newman and the at the time unknown Alan Ladd.

The Oscar-nominated Richard Day was responsible for the color design of the scene image. The decorator was responsible Julia Heron. Ray Rennahan was the technical advisor for the Technicolor cameras. The choreography of the dances took George Balanchine, the future husband of Vera Zorina. For both it was the first work on a feature film.

Ben Hecht wrote the screenplay based on one of his stories. The scenes with the Ritz Brothers were written by Sid Kuller ] and Ray Golden. Sam Perrin and Arthur Phillips contributed some comedy scenes.

George Gershwin, who composed some of the songs of the movie along with his brother Ira, died about half a year before the premiere of the film. The Gershwin composed the song Love Walked In, I Was Doing All Right, Love Is Here to Stay, I Love to Rhyme and Just Another Rhumba. After the death of George Gershwin Ira Gershwin collaborated with Vernon Duke. Of the two I are here to listen Am Not Complaining and Spring Again. From Duke came also the arrangements of the ballet scenes from Romeo and Juliet as well as the water nymph Ballet.

For the first color film, the Samuel Goldwyn -produced, had a budget of about 1.8 million U.S. dollars. The film became one of the biggest failures Goldwyn.
