The Jerk

The Jerk ( The Jerk ) is an American comedy film directed by Carl Reiner in 1979 and the first feature film in which Steve Martin played a major role.

Action

Navin Johnson is the adopted white son of an African American family in the country. One day he makes his way to St. Louis. Along the way he takes on a job as a gas station attendant and repaired by the way the broken glasses a customer with a previous owner. After he accidentally becomes the target of a crazy Waffennarrs, he joins a traveling circus. There he meets Marie know and love; However, this separates from him, because he can not offer her financial security. Unexpectedly Navin by his invention of the so-called " Opti - grave " eyeglass holder to a blow to the rich man. He marries both Marie and pulls her into an extravagant estate. His wealth but melts away instantly, are known as severe side effects of the eyeglass holder and he is covered with a damages claim.

He then ends up as a homeless person in the gutter, until it is discovered by Marie and his adoptive parents. This had meanwhile invested the money sent from his home, so that Navin's livelihood is secured again.

Roger Ebert wrote in the " Chicago Sun-Times " that he did not particularly witty found the film because it only consisted of bland gags with no real comedy.

The American Film Institute selected the film in 2000 at number 89 of the 100 best American comedies of all time.
