The Mark of Zorro is an American cloak-and -dagger film by Fred Niblo from the year 1920.

Action

When Don Diego Vega comes back after his training in distant Spain to his home in California, he has to realize that the Governor Alvarado came to power and brutally suppressed the population. Don Diego has to help his fellow countrymen and masquerades as Zorro Bandit. Only his servant Bernardo knows who is behind the mask of Zorro. As Zorro he robs the rich and distributes the money to the poor. Zorro can gradually overcome by the enemies of the country. When even the soldiers beat on his side, Governor Alvarado must abdicate. Zorro is celebrated as a hero and wins the heart of Lolita, which was already in love with Don Diego and now a hero gets to the man.

Background

The film was made after the published in 1919 as a magazine novel The Curse of Capistrano by Johnston McCulley.

The Mark of Zorro is the first adventure and costume film with Douglas Fairbanks in the lead role. Movies of this nature quickly made him an international star and the most popular actors of his time. The film had on 27 November 1920 in New York City premiered. It was the first film produced the film company United Artists. A year earlier, had Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and David Wark Griffith founded the film company.

Remake

The film was remade twice. The first time in 1940 as The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power as Zorro and the second time in 1974 with Frank Langella in the title role.

1998 there was a movie with the Zorro theme: The Mask of Zorro ( The Mask of Zorro ) starring Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas (directed by Martin Campbell ). Followed in 2005 by a sequel: The Legend of Zorro ( The Legend of Zorro ) starring Antonio Banderas (directed by Martin Campbell ).
