The Mocking of Christ (Grünewald)

The Mocking of Christ is a painting by Matthias Grünewald and one of his early works (around 1503-1505 ). It is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Jesus of Nazareth sits blindfolded on a low stone wall. His hands and arms are tied up with a rope. Before him stands a torturer, who pulls on the rope and the image viewer turns its back. Another torturer brought the fist to embark on the bound and drags him by the hair at the same time. From right man shall be additional carrying a staff in his left hand and with his right hand holds back the nascent slamming the torturer. An elderly man has turned to this, put his hand on his shoulder and seems to plead with him. In the background there are three other men: On the left side a musician can be seen playing on a flute, while he beats the drum. The younger of the two other men look unconcerned, almost serene. The third, from the right edge of the picture is only the head visible, seems sad and make faces.
