The Modernaires

The Modernaires are a vocal group of the swing. They are especially well known from her time in the 1940s with Glenn Miller. They influenced the The Four Freshmen and through them the Beach Boys and other vocal groups.

History

The Modernaires began in 1935 in Buffalo ( New York) as a vocal trio of Hal Dickinson, Chuck Goldstein, and Bill Conway ( they knew each other from high school ), which first appeared in the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra and then as Three Wizards of Ozzie when Ozzie Nelson. 1937 Ralph Brewster completed the vocal quartet. It sang with Fred Waring, Paul Whiteman (from 1937 in the radio show ), and from 1939 in the orchestra of Glenn Miller, who originally brought it for the recording of radio show theme Make Believe Ballroom as It's Make Believe Ballroom Time with the text of Martin Block. From 1941 met Paula Kelly ( 1919-1992 ) to the wife of Hal Dickinson. Among her hits with Glenn Miller include Juke Box Saturday Night, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Serenade in Blue, Kalamazoo and Moonlight cocktails. Chuck Goldstein left the Modernaires in 1942 and was replaced by Johnny Drake.

After Miller's disappearance, they also took up vocal versions of his instrumental hits. In the 1950s she appeared in a lot of radio and television, among others, Bob Crosby. Hal Dickinson ( died 1970) and Paula Kelly put the Modern Aires as part of the Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Tex Beneke and alone until the 1970s continued ( with an appearance in the film The Glenn Miller Story ). From 1950, they were also backing Group of Frank Sinatra.

1978 resigned Paula Kelly and her daughter Paula Kelly Jr. ( the already 1966 to 1971 sang with the Modernaires and with her two sisters (Julie and Martha ) in a vocal trio The Kelly Sisters) took over the band. When she died in 2012 followed her sister Julie Dickinson in the role of Lead Singers. The vocal group sings to this day (2012 ), where they returned to the Glenn Miller repertoire.

1999 they were incorporated into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
