The Monist

The Monist: An International Journal of General Philosophical Inquiry is a quarterly published journal of philosophy published by Open Court Publishing Company. The magazine was founded by Edward C. Hegeler in 1888. First editor was his later son in law Paul Carus. The first issue appeared in October 1890. According to Carus death in 1919 his wife, Mary Hegeler Carus followed up in 1936 as a publisher. With their departure, the magazine was discontinued. The new edition takes place since 1962 with the editors Eugene Freeman ( 1962-1983 ), John Hospers ( 1983-1991 ) and since 1991 Barry Smith. Each issue of the journal under a previously published philosophical topic, contribute to the different authors, so that each produced an anthology on the subject matter. Among the early authors counted Charles Sanders Peirce, among others, with a famous series of articles in 1892 / 92nd Bertrand Russell published his theory of logical atomism here. In addition, there are contributions by Hans- Otto Apel, Lewis White Beck, John Dewey, Gottlob Frege, Hans -Georg Gadamer, Charles Hartshorne, Jaako Hintikka, Sidney Hook, CI Lewis, Ernst Mach, Martha Nussbaum, Hilary Putnam, Willard Van Orman Quine or Gregory Vlastos.
