The Mule (song)

February 1971

The Mule (English for "The Dick head") is a song by British hard rock band Deep Purple, which was first published in July 1971 on her fifth studio album Fireball.

Formation

The first musical sketches for The Mule emerged at the end of 1970 during a two -week stay, the band in Welcombe, a town on the north coast of Cornwall. As in 1971, Deep Purple's concert tour started again, found himself in a break during the January 1971 some free time to complete the album Fireball. An experiment by Ian Paice, of The Mule was provided with a psychedelic flanging effect, failed, as he turned the tape and recorded it running backwards. Through a mishap half his drum track has been deleted. But since Paices drums had already been transported to the next venue in Europe, he played the deleted track after a borrowed drum kit, to repair them by overdubs. A slight irregularity can, however, hear.

Music

The Mule starts with the sound of a tambourine, to then open up with a huge " chord avalanche " the piece. The first one and a half minutes of the piece offer the singer Ian Gillan clearance for its typical aggressive style of singing. After that, the song slides into a " oriental-style melodies leadership," a psychedelic - funky -looking midsection, the scope for Ian Paices about six minutes drum solo offers at live performances. At the end of the studio version of the song sparked a pounding and whirring Instrumentalistik. The opening guitar riff ends the song.

Live performances

The Mule was introduced after its publication in Deep Purple's live program. He was, after a short vocal opening part Ian Gillan, as well as the live album Made in Japan nachzuhören, used as a free space for Ian Paices drum solo.

After the dissolution of the Mark II line-up in 1973 has been removed from The Mule Deep Purple Live program. In the years 1974 and 1975 Ritchie Blackmore played on the guitar riff of The Mule drum solo in the song after Paices You Fool No One. Short extracts of the songs were played in 1993 on a European tour.
