The National (Band)

The National is an American band founded in 1999. The lyrics of the band are known as " dark, melancholic and difficult to interpret " described. The style of The National is attributed to the indie rock and about with Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Wilco and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds compared. The members are originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, but now living in New York City. The baritone voice of the singer Matt Berninger gives the band its recognition. Completing the group by the two pairs of brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner and Bryan Devendorf & Scott.

Band History

The beginnings

1991 met Matt Berninger on Scott Devendorf, both studied at the University of Cincinnati. There, they met Mike Brewer, Casey Reas and Jeff Salem and founded the lo-fi garage band Nancy, who was named after Matt's mother. The band were together five years, but took at this time only one album titled Ruther 3429 on, which was released under the label Wife Records. The group broke up, as Matt, Scott, Jeff and Casey moved to Brooklyn.

Bryan, Bryce and Aaron were childhood friends who played together in various bands. When she Project Nim broke up in 1998, they joined Matt and Scott in Brooklyn.

The debut album: The National

Their first album was released in 2001 on The National Brass Land Records. The label was one of the band members Aaron and Bryce Dessner and a friend Alec Hanley Bemis. Her debut album laid the foundation for the band's career. They had played some live shows before publication.

Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers

The National's second album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers appeared in 2003. The magazine Uncut and the Chicago Tribune called Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers as one of the albums of the year.

Cherry Tree EP

Published in 2004 The National Cherry Tree EP that already contains live versions of About Today and All the Wine, two pieces of the next album. The release of the EP was considered a success, The National went along with the band The Walkmen on tour.

Alligator

Boxer

The National released their fourth album, Boxer, on 22 May 2007. It was like alligator much praise from music critics. The album features contributions from various guest musicians, including Sufjan Stevens and Doveman ( Thomas Bartlett ). It was chosen by Stereogum.com the second best album of the year by Paste Magazine and the best album of the year.

On 24 July 2007 The National Fake Empire played in the Late Show with David Letterman and on 26 September 2007 Apartment Story in Craig Ferguson's show.

In summer 2008, the band opened with Modest Mouse, the promotional tour for the REM album Accelerate. She also played many festivals in Europe and North America, including Coachella, Sasquatch, Glastonbury, Haldern Pop, Rock Werchter, Optimus Alive!, Oxegen, Benicàssim, Lowlands, O2 T Wireless, Rock im Park, All Points West and Lollapalooza.

Since its release more than 180,000 copies have been sold by boxers in the United States.

A Skin, A Night and The Virginia EP

In May 2008, the band released their first full-length documentary titled A Skin, a Night on DVD. The film, directed by Vincent Moon documenting the life of the band during the production of boxers and just before a show at London's Koko club. Along with the DVD release a CD collection of B-sides and rarities titled The Virginia EP was released.

The collaboration with Vincent Moon began long before the filming of the DVD. Vincent Moon discovered the band after the release of their first album and became friends with the band members to after a show in Paris. Soon after this meeting turned Moon music video for the National Daughters of the Soho Riots songs and Lit Up. It was his first music video ever.

High Violet and other publications

On 17 December 2008 the band informed the members of their mailing list that she was in the early days of recording a new album. In an interview with Pitchfork end of March 2009 Aaron Dessner said, the album did not have a name, but it is likely that it will in the tradition of the previous two albums begin with a "C".

On 17 February 2009 Aaron and Bryce Dessner published a compilation with various artists under the title Dark Was the Night on the label 4AD (the original label Beggar 's Banquet Records merged with previously 4AD ). The double CD with 31 songs appeared in favor of the Red Hot Organization. It includes a new song by the band titled So Far Around the Bend.

On March 10, 2010 The National played the title Terrible Love Jimmy Fallon in Late Night Show. On March 25, the band Bloodbuzz Ohio released as the first single from the new album High Violet and put the song for free download on their website. The album was released on May 11, 2010.

On 19 April 2011, the band released the Portal 2 Soundtrack Exile vilify, which had to be rewritten before publication due to changes in the flow of play. In 2012, the band recorded the song The Rains of Castamere for the soundtrack to the second season of the series Game of Thrones.

On 20-21. May 2013 ( UK / North America ) was released the new album Trouble Will Find Me

In August 2013, the band announced their next project. Thus, they wanted together with various guest musicians to record a cover album in honor of the Grateful Dead.

Political support

The band supported Barack Obama's presidential candidacy in 2008. In July this year, the members sold T -shirts with a picture of Obama and the words of Mr. November as a double reference to one of the songs on Alligator and the month of the U.S. presidential election. All proceeds were donated to Obama's election campaign.

Her song Fake Empire was played during the election campaign at many events and shown on 28 August 2008 as a soundtrack for a video during the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

The National regarded as Barack Obama's favorite band.
