The story revolves around the unfortunate fate of Mathilde Loisel, a very pretty, but born in a humble young woman who is looking for a ball a diamond necklace from a rich friend ( Madame Forestier ) borrows and loses this during the event. Together with her husband, a civil servant, she decides to zusammenzuleihen money from friends and replace the jewelry. Finally, she buys a very similar to the original piece, which she returns to her friend without them noticing the dizziness. Ten years Mathilde and her husband struggle with it from to repay their huge debts and become destitute while visibly. When drawn from the rigors Mathilde on a walk makes its remaining still young friend, this recognizes it initially not again.
