The Next Time I Fall

1986

The Next Time I Fall is a pop song written by Bobby Caldwell and Paul Gordon. It was interpreted as a duet by Peter Cetera and Amy Grant. The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 The Next Time I Fall in 1987, nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Duet in December 1986.

Formation

The song wrote Bobby Caldwell and Paul Gordon in Caldwell's apartment. Caldwell had just moved in and had besides a table and a DX7 synthesizer no other furnishings. In this environment, first came the musical backbone of the song, at a meeting held the music was composed for the chorus and inserted into the scaffold. Although the songwriter had a ready-made melody, but had no idea about the lyrics. This described Gordon as a community work in which they had both made concessions. The song was not originally intended as a duet, so Caldwell einsang the demo alone.

Peter Cetera decided to use the song, but really wanted to record a duet with a female singer. The decision for Amy Grant was unconventional, because Cetera wanted to work with a less well-known singer. Grant looked at it as a career opportunity, though she had made at the time pretty decent sales, but not had a radio hit. The demo of the song was Amy Grant played on the phone, later she got the vocal tracks by Peter Cetera. Amy Grant interrupted her current tour just for a day to record their vocal tracks in the studio. On the recordings had with guitarist Dann Huff and drummer Chester Thompson, the keyboards are from producer Michael Omartian.

Publication

The song was first released on ceteras solo album Solitude / Solitaire, released in the fall of 1986 as a single. The Next Time I Fall reached on December 6, 1986 # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where the song remained one week. It was only after the publication of the song ended Amy Grant her tour and learned that the duet with Peter Cetera became a number -one hit.
