The Odessa Tales

Stories from Odessa (Russian Одесские рассказы / Odesskije rasskasy ) is a collection of short stories by the Russian writer Isaac Babel. All the stories published 1923-1924 in various magazines and journals, 1931, the collected short stories were first published as a book. The " Odessa stories " belong to Isaac Babel's most successful works.

The plot of the short story cycle plays in today's Ukrainian port city of Odessa in the early 20th century, during the last days of the Russian Empire and the beginning of the October Revolution. It tells the life of a group of Jewish criminals who live in the then notorious ghetto -like neighborhood Moldavanka. Main character is " Benja Krik " who performs a rise from petty criminals to the " king" of the city.

Isaac Babel's Odessa stories were filmed during the time of the Soviet Union four times, the first time under the direction of Vladimir Wilner already 1927.
