The Onedin Line is the title of a British television series from the 1970s. It tells the story of the sailing ship's captain and later shipowner James Onedin and his family in England in the late 19th century. She ran from 1972 also in the evening program of the ARD and ORF. The outdoor scenes of the first season were mostly filmed in and above Dartmouth, the interior scenes completely in the studio.

A series of the BBC

The Onedin Line was one of the most successful BBC productions of the 1970s and was first broadcast on 25 October 1972 at the regional program of the Bayerischer Rundfunk in Germany. The idea and the novel gave Cyril Abraham, who had previously written short stories and sketches for various radio stations.

Tells the story of the sailing ship Captain James Onedin family (represented by Peter Gilmore ), who builds his own shipping line under difficult conditions. The story is set in Victorian England in the second half of the 19th century and extends over a period of about 26 years.

Some episodes are the living conditions of workers and ruling classes of the time of the action to be relatively rich in contrast dar. In an episode of the death of Karl Marx is mentioned and referred to his books as anarchist in this context.

Originally, the series was to play in the present, but this was rejected by the BBC. It is a pilot film was first turned, the unexpectedly well received by the TV audience. Then it was decided to start the production of a series, which soon proved to be a great success.

The Onedin Line ran worldwide success in more than 40 countries. There are a total of 91 original episodes in 8 seasons, some of which have not been dubbed into German. Speakers have included Christian Brückner ( James Onedin ), Norbert Langer ( Elmer Frazer ) and Almut Eggert ( Isabel Onedin / Frazer ).

Changes in the German dubbing

In the German and dubbed version for television ARD the names of the roles of Jessica Benton and Philip Bond have been changed. While both characters in the original English have the name Elizabeth and Albert, the first names Isabel and Elmar were used in German.

Theme music

The theme music comes from the ballet Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian ( Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia ) also can be heard numerous excerpts from symphonic works of other well-known composers.
