The Orchestral Tubular Bells

Occupation

  • Guitar: Mike Oldfield
  • Conductor: David Bedford
  • Orchestra: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

The Orchestral Tubular Bells is an arranged and conducted by David Bedford orchestral version of the album Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, which was recorded in September 1974 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Genesis

After the great success of the original Tubular Bells album and the simultaneous progressive rock wave, which is an increased incidence of classical and orchestral arrangements, David Bedford had the idea to put the album with an orchestra. Oldfield responded only slowly, but Bedford begged him until he agreed and even picked up the guitar. Oldfield also acted as co-producer and oversaw the editing.

Although the actual tunes are arranged only orchestral, there are further changes to the original: the use of vocal cords was deleted in all respects; so missing the instrument announcement and the so-called ' moribund chorus ' (see Tubular Bells 2003). In various reviews, the album was described as a soundtrack without a film, as the music unfolds in front of a like a movie.

The album reached # 17 in the UK album charts.

More versions

There are several versions of the album Tubular Bells. In contrast to the classical version of Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003 is a complete revision of the first work, as Oldfield was no longer satisfied with the quality of his most famous work continues after 30 years. Furthermore, there are also several edits by other performers, such as a purely rehearsed with guitar version of the duo duo duo called sonar sonar plays Mike Oldfield.
