The Palaeologian Dynasty. The Rise and Fall of Byzantium

The dynasty of the Palaiologos (Greek Παλαιολόγεια Δυναστεία ) is a trilogy of novels by Giorgos Leonardos on the Palaiologos, the last ruling dynasty of the Byzantine Empire. Leonardo received the highest national literary award of Greece for the work in 2008.

The individual books and their titles

The trilogy consists of the following historical novels:

  • Michael VIII Palaiologos ( Μιχαήλ Η Παλαιολόγος, 2004, ISBN 960 - 14-0998 -X), a fictional biography of Michael VIII of the disaster of the Fourth Crusade to the Sicilian Vespers
  • The Palaiologos ( Οι Παλαιολόγοι, 2006 ISBN 960-14-1206-9 ) about the civil wars of the Palaiologos dynasty
  • The last Paleologos ( Ο τελευταίος Παλαιολόγος, 2007 ISBN 978-960-14-1644-1 ) about Constantine XI. Palaiologos, the last emperor of Byzantium, and the fall of Constantinople in Opel

The trilogy is completed by a fourth novel Sophia Palaiologa ( Σοφία Παλαιολογίνα, 2008 ISBN 978-960-14-1836-0 ). Sophia Palaiologa was the last descendant of the family of the Palaiologos and was the wife of the Russian ruler Ivan III.
