Johanna claiming their mission, they have by the archangel Michael, who had appeared to her. The goal is the liberation of France. She refuses to interpret the phenomenon as an illusion of the devil and to sign an appropriate confession. The showing of the torture she answered with the statement, any confessions would later revoked. As she faints, you are spared the torture.

She is brought to the stake a first time and finally signs the confession (or the judge performs with her silent approval of their hand). So it is commuted to life-long imprisonment, which the English captain displeases obvious. Prior to incarceration but they regretted the confession and is calling for the judge to take it back. Therefore, Johanna is still burned in the end at the stake. English soldiers beat down a popular uprising after an old man had called, it will burned a saint.

Already during the questioning by the judge at the beginning of act one holds the present Johanna for a saint and throws himself at her feet, after which it is removed. Some other clergymen sympathize with her and want the big win ( in France), but it is unclear whether they believe in Joan's divine order. When Joan is burned at the stake for the first time, they encourage them to confess, as Joan herself still wants to remain faithful to their mission.

Johanna is pious and longs for the sacraments; the judges they want even blackmail fair and communion so that they confess. Their suffering is partly modeled on the Passion of Jesus Christ, it will be mocked by rough fellows and even receives a braided crown.
