The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is the debut album by British band Pink Floyd. The album was released on August 5, 1967, and reached # 6 on the British charts.

General

The recordings for the album were from February to June 1967 in London's Abbey Road Studios instead. It is the only album that has arisen completely under the musical direction of the former band member and actual founder of Pink Floyd Syd Barrett. Guitarist David Gilmour joined the band in 1968.

The lyrics of the album range from childlike - naive stories of scarecrows, gnomes or a bicycle to futuristic visions of the universe. This is often accompanied by spherical music that was the basis for the psychedelic image of the early Pink Floyd.

The songs were written partly in collaboration with the architect and artist Mike Leonart. He asked Pink Floyd, his art exhibitions in which he experimented with lighting objects and light projections, live to be backed with improvised music. Accordingly, the songs were often extended to provide space for extended improvisations and also for later performances by Pink Floyd.

The album's title refers to the 1908 by Kenneth Grahame published the English children's classic " The Wind in the Willows", the seventh chapter ( The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ) is entitled " The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ". In it, the water rat and the mole in search of a stray animal and make it a religious experience: "Here I had my song - dream, this is the place where I heard the music, whispered the Rat, as in a trance. Here, in this holy place, if anywhere, here we are HIM surely find! " ( This is the place of my song -dream, the place the music played to me, whispered the Rat, as if in a trance. Hereford, in this holy place, here if anywhere, surely we shall find Him ).
