The Pretenders

The Pretenders are a British rock band, which has been named after the song The Great Pretender by The Platters.

History

The Pretenders were founded in 1978 by Chrissie Hynde. The initial band consisted Hynde, James Honeyman -Scott, Pete Farndon and Gerry Mackleduff. The latter was soon replaced by Martin Chambers.

The first released single, Stop Your Sobbing, was a Kinks cover. It was produced by Nick Lowe and reached, as is the second single Kid, # 33 on the British charts. The third single Brass in Pocket managed in 1979 to # 1 in late 1979 played the Pretenders at the Concerts for the People of Kampuchea.

In January 1980, the debut album Pretenders, which sold well in particular in the U.S. and was highly praised by the critics appeared:

The unnamed second album from 1981, and the singles Talk of the Town, Message of Love and I Go to Sleep had similar successes. On a tour of the U.S. in the same year, Chambers injured a hand in December, the other, which is why many concerts had to be canceled.

On July 14, 1982 Farndon was fired because of his heroin addiction by the band two days later died Honeyman -Scott from an overdose of cocaine. This led to some changes. As a replacement for Farndon first came Tony Butler, but soon left the band again around Big Country to join. His successor was Malcolm Foster. Instead Honeyman -Scott came only Billy Bremner of Rockpile, then Mick Green and finally Robbie McIntosh. Farndon died in April 1983.

In early 1983, came the Single Back on the Chain Gang on the market, dedicated Honeyman -Scott and made ​​the leap to number 17 in the UK. In 2005, the Pretenders were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In October 2008 then Break Up the Concrete was released.
