The Roaring Silence is the seventh album by British rock band Manfred Mann's Earth Band. It was published in 1976 by Bronze Records.

The album

After the album Nightingales & Bombers of guitarist and vocalist Mick Rogers left the band as a background singer, he is on this album again here. For him, Dave Flett came on guitar and Chris Thompson on vocals. Like the previous album The Roaring Silence begins with a cover version of Bruce Springsteen's Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, here Blinded by the Light. The second piece Singing the Dolphin Through Barbara Thompson can be heard as a guest musician with a saxophone solo in the diversion. Dominated by Manfred Mann's Moog - game instrumental piece Waiter There's a Yawn in My Ear was recorded live and edited. The Road to Babylon begins with choral singing and remembers with his exalted mood on Father of Day, Father of Night from the album Solar Fire. The album ends with the quiet ballad Questions, wherein said composer Chris Slade drew on a piano piece by Franz Schubert ( Impromptu G flat, D889, 3).

With Chris Thompson on vocals, the Earth Band Spirits in the Night of Nightingale & Bombers has once again taken up. This version was released as a single in 1977 and is on the 1998 CD release of The Roaring Silence as a bonus track.

Reception

The Roaring Silence was the hitherto most commercially successful album of the band Earth. It peaked in the UK and U.S. charts each space 10 and in Germany ranked 26th The single from the Blinded by the Light came in at number 1 U.S. singles chart.

Mike Degagne writes on allmusic, The Roaring Silence basks in veiled poetry, cryptic but fascinating at the same time, close to the complexity of progressive rock, yet far away from the pomposity and he keeps the album both commercially and artistically for the best performance of the tape. He gave the album four out of five stars.
