The Rock (Rachmaninoff)

The Rock (Op. 7; russ: Утёс ) is a symphonic poem by Sergei Rachmaninoff dedicated to Nikolai Rimsky -Korsakov. It was composed in the summer of 1893, their first performance took place on April 2, 1894 in Moscow at a concert of the Russian Musical Society instead.

The fabric of the symphonic poem is a poem taken from The Rock of Mikhail Lermontov. The publication focuses on the encounter between a rock and a cloud, but which may in the long run not enter into any relationship.
