The Rose (Film)

The Rose is an American feature film from the year 1979. The plot is based on the biography of Janis Joplin.

Action

The film is set in 1969. Maryrose Foster is a rock star, called "The Rose". It comes at a concert in New York City and is completely burnt out after a long tour and a life with plenty of alcohol and drugs. Next destination is Florida, where she for the first time to occur in their home town, which reminds them of their hard past. This will initially be their last concert, as they desperately needed a break. Your manager Rudge not want to know. It was he who had built from a complete stranger within two years a superstar and now, when they finally make the big money, he can not get enough. He signs contracts for future commitments, so that Rose has no choice but to go on.

When the country singer Billy Ray forbids her one more time to sing one of his songs, Rose turns through. She flees with the driver Houston Dyer and falls in love with him. After a night in New York the night ends in her hotel room. Rose thinks he has finally found a friend who understands them. However, the relationship suffers from the changing moods of Rose, the Houston Dyer can not stand. Also Rudge makes their lives difficult. He holds Dyer for a no-good.

In her hometown in Florida, she meets a day before the concert her old friend Sarah. Dyer she meets in an ambiguous situation, which he misinterpreted and leaves it again. Before the concert, Rose tells frustrated with Rudge that this was their last show for now. Rudge it fires then and wants this concert, which in turn means so much to her to cancel, while the audience already waiting in the stadium. Bette Midler was awarded in 1980 for her portrayal of Rose Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Young Actress. The title song The Rose received a Golden Globe for best song.

Bette Midler and Frederic Forrest were also each nominated for an Oscar. Other Oscar nominations the film received in the categories Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

Forrest was honored by the National Society of Film Critics for Best Nebendarstelller.
