The Sixteen

The Sixteen is a British choir, founded by and under the direction of Harry Christophers.

History

In 1977, Harry Christophers together a group for a concert, which continued to exist in its unnamed formation over a number of years until she gave her first concert officially paid in Magdalen College Chapel in May 1979. In the same month, the choir gave its premiere in London in the Church of St John 's, Smith Square in London.

In the following decade, the choir became known for sound recording production and television appearances internationally. His first album under the title Salve Regina: Music from the Eton Choir Book appeared in 1980 under the label meridian. His first BBC appearance was the choir in 1981.

1986 was established for the first Messiah performance of the choir again in St John's, Smith Square, with a live recording for Hyperion Records own orchestra under the name Symphony of Harmony and Invention, now renamed The Orchestra of The Sixteen. The choir made ​​the following year in 1987 an intensive concert tour from London to Barcelona and Italy with ten concerts in 13 days, in which the oratorio was performed. 1988 were made with the Grand Prix du Disque excellent recordings of the Messiah and John Taverner's Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas, both published by Hyperion.
