The Sky at Night

The Sky at Night is a monthly series broadcast by the BBC on the subject of astronomy. Moderator, was until his death in December 2012, Patrick Moore, who had moderated since this series was first screened on April 24, 1957 without interruption. She was sure entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Only the mission in July 2004 could not moderate Moore due to an acute salmonellosis. He was represented in this show by Chris Lintott of Oxford University. On 1 April 2007, the shipment as part of a special program celebrated its 50th anniversary under the theme of "time travel " in which Jon Culshaw occurred.

Contents of the shipment

The program covers a wide range of astronomical and space themes. Both basic issues such as the formation of stars, radio astronomy, satellite, black holes, neutron stars as well as topical issues such as the Leonids meteor swarms and Perseids and the flyby of comet Halley are discussed.

At irregular intervals, guests are in the show. Among them were the leading astronomers, including Harlow Shapley, Fred Hoyle and Carl Sagan. Occasionally, also Brian May, guitarist of the band Queen, and a doctorate in astrophysics guest of the program.

Recognition

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of The Sky at Night, the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid in the name 57424 Caelumnoctu. It is in naming the Latinized form of the name and the date of the first shipment.

The Royal Mail announced on the anniversary out a series of six commemorative stamps.
