The Snowman

The Snowman is a children's book by the English author Raymond Briggs, published in 1978. The first broadcast in 1982 film adaptation was nominated in 1983 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ".

Action

The Snowman tells the story of a little boy who builds a snowman in a winter day. This wakes up the next night to life. Then the little boy has to explain the snowman many things from the world of people who do not understand this, is rapidly approaching the two. On a motorcycle, they explore the area around the house and scare this many animals.

In the following, the snowman takes the boy on a plane trip. Cross the rooftops of the city and then fly further and further north until they come to a snowy forest. There is a festival on which are many other snowmen present. Finally, they get to Santa Claus, who gives the little boy a scarf with a snowman motif.

Subsequently, the two return home. When the boy wakes up the next morning and looks out the window, he noticed that the sun is shining and the Snowman is consequently melted. He wonders if he has all just a dream, but then finds the scarf in his pocket, gave him the Santa Claus.

Filming

1982, a 26 -minute animated film adaptation of the book was produced for the British Channel 4 television. Directed by the Englishwoman Dianne Jackson, producer was John Coates. The first broadcast took place on 24 December 1982. The film is without spoken words, only exception is composed by the British composer Howard Blake piece Walking in the Air The entire rest of the music of the film comes from Blake.

Computer game

In 1984 Quick Silva a programmed by Rob Harris game for the Commodore 64 called "The Snowman", which refers to the novel. It is a representative of the genre platformer. The title tune is taken from the animated version.

Reception

The BAFTA Awards 1982, the film adaptation won the " Best Children's Film ," at the Academy Awards in 1983, she was nominated in the category " Best Animated Short Film ". In 1984 she won the award for best film at the Tampere International Short Film Festival.

The film score and a published version of the film on videotape became bestsellers. To date, The Snowman is broadcast annually on Christmas Eve on Channel 4. The film is considered as a British Christmas classic.
