The Steampacket

The Steam Packet was a British blues rock band that was founded in 1962 by Long John Baldry (vocals ). After some line-up changes, the band stabilized in 1965 around the other band members Rod Stewart (vocals and harmonica), Julie Driscoll (vocals), Brian Auger (keyboards), Vic Briggs (guitar ), Richard Brown ( bass) and Micky Waller (drums).

The band was managed by the Yardbirds manager Giorgio Gomelsky and played in 1965 with the Rolling Stones. As a solo artist Stewart and Baldry had their own manager, the scheduled recordings for a Steam Packet album delayed. Only demo recordings could be performed.

The career of the band in this lineup was short, they broke up in 1966 again. Most of the members were in their later careers to a wider audience known to Stewart went to Shotgun Express, Auger and Driscoll founded Trinity, Baldry also toured with Bluesology, Waller went to the Jeff Beck Group, where he eventually followed Stewart, and the New Briggs joined Animals at.

For contractual reasons no recording of The Steam Packet appeared on the market. The demo recordings were first published in the 1970s on LP under the title Steampacket, The First Supergroup, although this is not acted strictly speaking a supergroup, as the band members were still largely unknown at that time.
