The Surrogate Woman

The surrogate mother is a South Korean film directed by Im Kwon- taek from the year 1987. He is also known under the title The Surrogate Woman. Premiere was on 21 March 1987.

Action

The central aim of the film is to the society of men to lead on the basis of surrogacy in mind that is practiced in order to secure a male heir (main reason for this is the Korean ancestor worship ). However, this is done without regard to the feelings of the surrogate mother or the barren wife.

The story is set in the late 19th century. The rich Shin and his wife can no offspring. Therefore, Shin's family decides to call in a substitute mother. The choice falls on the young Oknyo. Over time, Oknyo and Shin used to each other what the barren wife of course do not like. Oknyo initially enjoys the pampering life of the rich. However, they suppressed the fact that it is only set as a servant. This takes revenge after birth, however bitter. She can not cope with the separation from her child and commits suicide.

Awards

Actress Kang Soo- yeon won an award at the Venice Film Festival for Best Actress.

In addition, the film won three prizes at the 32nd Asia- Pacific Film Festival 1987: Best Film and Best Director ( Im Kwon- taek ), and Best Supporting Actress ( Pang Hui ).

Even in the domestic South Korea Sibaji could win prizes. The 25th Dae Jong Award, he was honored for Best Cinematography ( Ku Jung- mo) and the best lighting design ( Kang Kwang -ho). In the film 7 Critics Awards, the film won the award for Best Cinematography and the Special Jury Prize.
