The Tangent

The Tangent is a progressive rock supergroup as a side project of the band Parallel or 90 Degrees (short: Po90 ) was founded in 2003. She became famous by appearances at many international progressive rock festival.

History

The history of the group began in 1999, when Po90 appeared together with the Flower Kings. At this time, Andy Tillison was busy trying to gather ideas for the next album Po90 More Exotic Ways to Die. Impressed by the Flower Kings albums he decided to take the more " progressive" pieces of the new album separately. Some time after the release of More Exotic Ways to Die handed Tillison the Flower Kings crew member Ian Oakley, who later became the manager of The Tangent was little, the demo recordings as incurred. Roine Stolt, Zoltan Csörsz and Jonas Reingold offered spontaneously to participate on this album. This ensemble was completed with saxophonist David Jackson and the Po90 - keyboardist Sam Baine. The debut album The Music That Died Alone was enthusiastically received by the trade press.

It was followed by several line-up changes - in 2007 existed only as The Tangent Trio, consisting of Tillison, Reingold and Jaime Salazar - two more studio and two live albums. In 2008 the fourth studio album, Not as Good as the Book was published. It consists of two discs, one of which contains the first seven relatively short songs, the second only two pieces of each 20 minutes in length. The concept album describes how in 2008 accidentally using the album Relayer by Yes, the world is destroyed and 80,000 years later, scientists are trying to reference still preserved progressive rock CDs from that time to reconstruct the lives of the people.

In 2008, The Tangent were also on together with the Swedish progressive rock band Beardfish. Since the same year bassist Reingold, guitarist and drummer Jonsson Salazar had given their exit known, because they saw no development in the band, Andy Tillison began collaborating with the members of Beardfish. In June this year he officially announced that the four members of Beardfish now also played at The Tangent, which was confirmed by Rikard Sjoblöm. For The Tangent was first included in the band's history is one octet. Her first appearance was the new cast on the Summer's End Festival in September 2008.

The following year, the occupation has been changed again and now consisted of the founding members Andy Tillson, Theo Travis and Guy Manning. As new members joined the band on bass, Paul Burgess on drums and Jonathan Barrett. This occupation, with which also the following album Down and Out in Paris and London was recorded, was the first, which consisted exclusively of British musicians. After several line-up changes took place again and it appeared new studio recordings, unpublished archive material and live recordings.

Style

The debut album The Music That Died Alone was still strongly influenced by the Canterbury sound and retro prog from the Flower Kings. The Canterbury - share was gradually reduced, not later than Not as Good as the Book The Tangent play progressive rock with influences from the 70s and 80s. They are therefore by Transatlantic the second known retro prog supergroup.
