The Trespasser

The Trespasser is an American film drama from the year 1929.

Action

Marion Donnell worked as a stenographer for the Chicago lawyer Hector Ferguson. She married Jack Merrick, the son of a wealthy businessman. But even during the honeymoon, Jack's father brings his son to annul the marriage. The father has plans for a socially more adequate wedding. The Mad Marion leaves Jack.

About a year later versa Marion, now mother of Jack junior, in the law practice back. Financial problems cause a breakdown. Your employer Ferguson reaches under her arms and provide it with a luxury apartment available. When Ferguson dies shortly thereafter, he left her half a million dollars. To feed her child, she informed Jack, whose new wife Katherine is a nursing care. Jack's father is clear that there is a male heir from Jack's first marriage and demanded custody of the child. As Katherine agrees to divorce Jack, Marion are after. After Katherine's death Marion and Jack are reunited.

Background

The premiere took place on 11 November 1929. Gloria Swanson in the movie sang three songs: Love, Your Magic Spell is Everywhere by Edmund Goulding and Elsie Janis, I Love You Truly by Carrie Jacobs Bond ( duet with Robert Ames), Serenade by Enrico Toselli ( translated by Sigmund Spaeth ). The performer John Merrick, the father of Jack, William Holden, whose real name was Chester Willis Holt and is not to be confused with the Oscar winner William Holden.

Edmund Goulding directed 1937 remake of his film. Under the title That Certain Woman Bette Davis and Henry Fonda played the lead roles.

Reviews

Variety certified the film a superior direction, the lift, the conventional story.

Was Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times, director Goulding have the film applied in a non-standard width for him what it confers a the whole movie lasting originality.

Awards

In the third Academy Awards 1930 Gloria Swanson was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
