The tunnel is a German film from 2001, which is based on a true story (See: Tunnel 29). It work with, among others, Heino Ferch, Nicolette Krebitz and Alexandra Maria Lara. The film was broadcast on television in two parts, but there is also a theatrical version.

Action

After Harry Melchior 1961 wins the swimming championships of the GDR, who fled to the West succeeds. Am Checkpoint Charlie and he happened disguised with a fake pass the border and thus follows his friend Matthis Hiller, the recently managed to flee through the sewers. However, in the attempt to escape his pregnant girlfriend Carol ( Claudia Michelsen ) has been arrested and now sits in jail. Harry would necessarily mean that his sister, his brother and their daughter are also retrieved from the smugglers in the West, but to learn that the trick with the fake passports only works for one member of a family.

Harry then has a brilliant, but almost impossible idea: Since the GDR has to get all above-ground facilities in the West, closed up and just checked the drains, Harry makes the decision to dig a tunnel under the wall through it. Here he benefits that Matthis of occupation is engineer. Together with Vittorio " Vic" Costanza and Fred of Klausnitz ( Felix Eitner ), which already had Harry's escape helpers, rent Matthies and Harry a disused factory, from their cellar they want to dig a tunnel under the wall.

When the force of an evening sitting in a cafe and the plans forged, they are overheard by Fritzi Scholz. She finds out from where undermines the troops and penetrates the next day while working in the old factory one. Caught and taken by men but admits Fritzi that she has overheard her and she also wants to get her fiancé to the West. After last doubt Fritzi could be a spy, are dispelled, Fritzi completed from now on the team.

Work is progressing slowly. When the force is already under the Berlin Wall through, rolling over them with a tank across the road, which almost brings the tunnel to collapse and Harry buried. However, it is possible Fritzi to save Harry, what eliminates the last of his doubts about their person. At one border crossing Vitt is suddenly arrested by the police on suspicion of escape aid and put in jail until further notice. However, he is in jail nothing of the tunnel award, claiming that despite torture to be innocent, so that it is released on Christmas Eve 1961.

However, the work is not progressing as quickly as expected. Therefore, the troupe decides to include more people, which also increases the number of Western refugees significantly. Harry is not initially excited about it, but it remains, given the long time span of the tunnel no other choice.

When the tunnel work proceeds faster now, gets wind of the American NBC television network and provides financial security and a not inconsiderable sum for the exclusive rights of the tunnel.

Criticism

Encyclopedia of the International Films: An equally convincing as oppressive time portrait, which is supported by good performers and the means of the voltage cinemas effectively used for the purpose of its dedicated story.
