The Turnip (fairy tale)

The turnip is a farce (ATU 1689A, 1535). He stands in the Children's and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm in place 146 (KHM 146) and is based on a lost manuscript from the 14th century called Raparius.

Content

A poor soldier and farmer reaps a huge turnip, which he gives to the king, for which he will be richly rewarded. Since his rich brother brings the king gold and horses, but gets back only the turnip. He lures his brother also under pretext of a treasure, where it take murderers and hang out with a bag over his head to a tree, with coming of an tramp of horses she sells. It is a student, the farmer responds from above, he hang in the Sack of Wisdom, where he learn anything. The student wants that too and finally allowed him sent down and pull himself up yourself. The farmer takes the student's horse, but sends someone who freed him.

Origin

Grimm's note explains the origin from a Latin poem of the Middle Ages, which contains 392 lines in elegiac meter and Raparius is overwritten (obtained is Jacob Grimm copy of 1814 ).
