The Verlaines

The Verlaines are a New Zealand indie rock band.

History

The Verlaines were formed in late 1980 in Dunedin ( New Zealand). The founding members were Graeme Downes (guitar, vocals), Craig Easton ( guitar, vocals), Greg Kerr ( drums), Phillip Higham (bass) and Anita Pillai (keyboards). In the following years were constantly changing the line- ups of the band. Later members were the bassist Jane Dodd, Mike Stoodley and Russell Fleming; the drummer Alain Haig, Caroline Easther, Robbie Yeats, Gregg Cairns and Darren Stedman and guitarist Paul Winders. The only constant member of the band until today is Graeme Downes.

The music of Verlaine was laid in the 1980s by New Zealand label Flying Nun Records. The band at this time was a typical representative of the Dunedin Sound. Their first release had three songs on the legendary 1981's Dunedin Double EP.

The Verlaine played from 1985 to the present nine studio albums, one. It was between the sixth Over the Moon (1997) and the seventh album Pot Boiler ( 2007), a ten-year break, in which Graeme Downes his solo album Hammers and Anvils published and devoted his academic career. Placements in the charts do not reach the Verlaine in their previous band history.
