The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar ( original English title " The Very Hungry Caterpillar " ) is a picture book of the U.S. children's book author and illustrator, Eric Carle, which appeared in 1969.

Content

The book tells the story of a caterpillar that hatches from an egg and eats a week through many foods. At the end of the week it is thick and round, pupates and becomes a beautiful butterfly.

The book pages have holes through the images that are partially punched through multiple pages to illustrate how the caterpillar eats through the food.

The story begins with an egg from which hatches a caterpillar that eats everything possible to get bigger. A day is shown on each book page:

She eats more and more until it's Saturday. Then she eats all messed up and feels very bad. On Sunday morning she only eats a green leaf and because she is much better. Then she eats nothing but pupates and becomes a beautiful butterfly.

Reception

The " Hungry Caterpillar ", published on 20 March 1969 was not Carles first book, but earned him the breakthrough and enabled him to give up his work as a commercial artist. It enjoys enormous popularity around the world and has been predicted by the publishing house Gerstenberg sold ( the publisher of the German version) about 29 million times.

As at the date punching holes in (children's) book pages and with an increasing number of fruit, width of the pages were a novelty.
