Benkler is in the book on the hypothesis that a culture be freely exchanged in the information that could prove to be economically more efficient than one in which innovation through patents and copyright are difficult. In the production methods of the information economy, based on collective learning and sharing of knowledge ( "information - sharing" ) are based, he sees a third type of economic production in addition to markets and central planning.
