The World in His Arms

Stormy trip to Alaska ( in the original The World in His Arms ) is an American adventure film directed by Raoul Walsh from the year 1952. The screenplay is based on a novel by Rex Beach. The premiere took place in Germany on 28 November 1952.

Action

San Francisco in 1850. The Russian Countess Marina Selanova flees her arranged marriage to Prince Semyon. You can book a ride on the ship of Captain Portugee to Sitka in Alaska. There, her uncle Ivan Vorashilov is governor and can protect them.

The illegal sealers captain Jonathan Clark, " The Boston Man", a bitter rival of Portugees, freed his schanghaiten of this sailors. The Countess sends a man to Clark, to see if they can continue traveling with him. But Clark hates Russians and rejects their offer. When Marina embarks himself to Clark, she pretends to be the companion of the Countess and can change his mind. After a while, the two fall in love. Clark makes her a marriage proposal, the Marina accepts.

When they land in a port, finds Prince Semyon Marina and bring them yourself to Sitka. Clark, who feels betrayed by Marina, makes Portugee with one race to Alaska, with his ship as a bet. Clark wins, but Portugee tries to take over Clark's ship. There is a dispute between two teams, along comes as a Russian gunboat and all the men shipped to Sitka.

Prince Semyon blackmailed Marina with the release Clark to marry her. However versa Clark and his men make. He saves Marina and sail away with her.

Background

At the time in which the film is set ( 1850), Alaska was a Russian colony, the only overseas colony of Russia. But the colony proved for the Russian Empire (then under Tsar Nicholas I ) as unprofitable and difficult to manage. For the equivalent of 7.2 million U.S. dollars, the U.S. bought the colony of the Russian Empire, which after losing the Crimean War had need of money from. On October 18, 1867 Alaska became a possession of the United States on ( this day is as Alaska Day is a public holiday in Alaska) and was on 3 January 1959, the 49th state of the United States (see History of Alaska ).

Sig Ruman was born in 1884 when Siegfried Albon Rumann in Hamburg. In 1924 he moved to the United States and has been used on Broadway, before in 1929 he went to the movie.

For the interior of the film Russell A. Gausman and Alexander were responsible Golitzen. They were supported by Julia Heron, who also won an Oscar later.
