History

The theater was founded in Room 1948 by Helmuth Gmelin as a " room theater " with a performance of Friedrich Hebbel's Maria Magdalena. The first performances took place in the attic of a tenement house in Harvestehude in their own home. The actors often came from Gmelin's own drama school.

The narrow spaces were unsuitable for many plays, a move to its own premises was necessary. A center served a neoclassical villa on the Alsterchaussee 30, which was built in the 1830s and since 1947 is a listed building.

After the death of Helmuth Gmelin in 1959 his daughter Gerda Gmelin took over the theater. She was the same director, producer and actress. Numerous time-critical and advantgardistische plays were performed, which led to a reputation of the theater. The small ensemble could always be supplemented by an obligation of other actors who were working at the Hamburg stage. Sunday found musical brunch place in the rooms of the theater.

After deletion of the annual subsidy provided the theater 1999 play activities a. There was also a significant need for renovation and Gerda Gmelin was at least 80 years old and no longer in good health. The building was sold in 2002.
