Theatro Municipal (São Paulo)

The Theatro Municipal de São Paulo is a theater and opera house in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Theatro Municipal is one of the landmarks of the city and is known for its architecture and historical significance. The construction was started in 1903 under the design engineer Ramos de Azevedo and the two Italian architects Cláudio Rossi and Rossi Domitian - inspired by the Italian Opera, mainly La Scala. The house was opened on September 12, 1911 with a performance of the opera Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas. In the theater, a number of the most famous artists in the world history have occurred in the 20th century, such as Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Isadora Duncan, Beniamino Gigli, Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova, Arthur Rubinstein, Magda Tagliaferro, Arturo Toscanini and many others. The Theatro is the seat of the São Paulo Municipal Symphonic Orchestra, the Coral Lírico and the urban ballet São Paulo.

On 10 June 2011, the Theatro was reopened after three years of renovations.
