Thelma Ritter

Thelma Ritter ( born February 14, 1902 in New York City, New York, USA, † February 4, 1969 ibid ) was an American actress of the 1940s to the 1960s. She made a name for himself as a character actress and has predominantly been as concise Supporting Actress in appearance. They often portrayed women of advanced age that stood by her brash humor.

Life and career

Thelma Ritter was born in 1902 in Brooklyn, New York. Even as a student she appeared in school plays and amateur theater groups; later, she took acting classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She first worked as a stage actress, was then temporarily housewife and mother. In the early 1940s she worked in radio.

As a film actress Thelma Ritter appeared first in 1947 in The Miracle of Manhattan in appearance. She was nominated several times for the most coveted movie and acting awards, so among other things, for an Oscar, Golden Globe and an Emmy, but only once they could one of the awards, a Tony Award, actually win. Therefore knight is often mentioned in one breath with Deborah Kerr, as this was proposed as an actress in film history most often for a price they then but did not get.

Today's audience is Thelma Ritter probably best known for her roles as Nurse of LB Jeff Jefferies ( James Stewart) in Rear Window, as hard-working experienced maid of Margo Channing (Bette Davis) in All About Eve and as a hard-drinking housekeeper Alma Doris Day in Pillow Talk. In all these roles, she stood out for her wit and her brash nature.

Shortly after an appearance on the Jerry Lewis Show Thelma Ritter suffered a heart attack in 1969 from which she never recovered. She died ten days before her 67th birthday. With her husband Joseph Moran she was married from 1927 until her death, she had two children.
