Them Mushrooms

Them Mushrooms is a Kenyan band. Stylistically, it is mainly the traditional elements of the culture of the Bantu and partly attributable to the reggae. The group, known African band is considered to be the first on the continent's borders addition, produced under changing cast a number of studio albums.

History

Them Mushrooms was founded in 1969 under the name " Avenida Success" in Mombasa and from the start was dominated family, since four of the six founding members ( Teddy kalanda, Billy Sarro, George Zirro and John Katana ) were brothers. With Dennis Kalume Harrison came back two years later added another brother. Another year later, in 1972, named to Take Care of Them Mushrooms in. Had great success Them Mushrooms 1982 entitled " Jambo Bwana ", which is considered one of the best known Kenyan pop songs and gecovert among others, Boney M.. As with most other songs the band also the text of Jambo Bwana is held in Swahili.

By 1986 the band played at the hotels on the coast of Mombasa, before she moved in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. After the death of songwriter Dennis Kalume Harrison in 1992, the band was faced with the resolution; George Zirro left the band to continue working on his solo career. Nevertheless, the group changing cast was continued and renamed itself in 2002 " Uyoga ", but the former name was continued unofficially. Today is obtained from the starting lineup only Teddy kalanda, added Henry Ndenge Saha and Ben Mutwiwa.

In addition to her work as a musician, the band also acts as a producer for young artists. In 2009, John Katana received, on behalf of Them Mushrooms, by President Mwai Kibaki personally one of the highest honors of Kenya ( Head of State Commendation ).
