Theo van Boven

Theo van Boven ( born May 16, 1934) is a Dutch jurist and professor emeritus of international law at the University of Maastricht. Theo van Boven, in 1985, the Right Livelihood Award ( also known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize "). In addition, he was from 2001 to 2004 the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture.

Life

Theo van Boven earned his doctorate in 1967. Until 1977 he taught at the University of Amsterdam human rights. During this time he represented the Netherlands from 1970 to 1975 in the UN Human Rights Commission. From 1977 to 1985 he worked as director of Human Rights in the UN Department. He sat down at this time is always to ensure that human rights should not only be a subordinate policy of the UN but a guide at all levels of the UN.

Thereafter, van Boven was a professor at the University of Limburg.
