Theo Vennemann

Theo Vennemann called Nierfeld, ( born May 27, 1937 in Oberhausen- Sterkrade ) is a German linguist and professor emeritus of Germanic and Theoretical Linguistics at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

After his Abitur at the Hoffmann- of - life Faller School Brunswick Vennemann studied 1957 mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Göttingen. In 1959 he moved to the University of Marburg where he graduated mathematics, German and Philosophy in 1964 with the state exam. After a stay at the University of Texas at Austin Vennemann was from 1965 to 1974 as a teaching assistant and assistant professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and received his PhD in 1968 on the German phonology.

From 1974 to 2005 he was Chair of Germanic and Theoretical Linguistics at the University of Munich, where, inter alia, Associate Dean and Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Language and Literature II He also had several guest professorships, inter alia, in Salzburg, on the Free University of Berlin and the State University of New York. Since 1996, Vennemann is also a member of the municipal council of Ried.

Vennemann was known for his research on general linguistic typology, but also for linguistic prehistory of Europe. His theories of the vaskonischen original language as parent language of Europe and of the Atlantic Semitiden remain controversial. He also has many years of studies done that try to detect a mediation of the origin of the runes on the Carthaginian
