Theodor Kalide

Theodor Erdmann Kalide ( born February 8, 1801 in Chorzów, † August 26 1863 in Gliwice ) was a German sculptor.

Life

Kalide studied in Berlin with Johann Gottfried Schadow and Christian Daniel Rauch, he created under the direction of the latter the lions on the grave monument of General Gerhard von Scharnhorst on the disability cemetery in Berlin.

His first independent work, the " boy with a swan ", was commissioned by Frederick William III. executed in bronze for the Charlottenburg Palace garden. This sculpture had been a great success and was later often repeated in zinc cast as a fountain figure. ( cf. boy with a swan in Gliwice / Gleiwitz )

Returning from a trip to Italy in 1846 to Berlin, he modeled for Chorzów 1853 there laid down statue of the Minister Friedrich Wilhelm von Reden in miner 's uniform.

His major work, a drunken Bacchante on a Panther, has received only a torso.

His late works belong to the group of a boy with the goat, and a Madonna and Child.

Kalide died in 1863 and is at the Gliwice Steelworks cemetery buried. In 2005 his tomb was reconstructed.
