Theodor Panofka

Theodor Sigismund Panofka (* February 25, 1800 in Breslau, † June 20, 1858 in Berlin) was a German archaeologist, historian and philologist.

Panofka studied at the University of Berlin 1819-1823 philology. In 1824 he founded with Otto Magnus von Stackelberg, August Kestner and Eduard Gerhard in Rome Hyperboreisch - Roman society. In 1826 he met the French diplomat Pierre -Louis de Blacas d' Aulps know and became his adviser and teacher. In 1829 he co-founded the " Instituto di corrispondenza archeologica ", later the German Archaeological Institute. At the National Archaeological Museum Naples, where he worked with Eduard Gerhard, he was concerned with the cataloging of ancient vases. In 1836 he became an assistant at the Royal Museum in Berlin, in 1844 Professor of Archaeology at the University of Berlin. Since 1856 he was curator of the Royal Collection of Vases in Berlin.
