Theodor von Frimmel

Theodor von Frimmel - Traisenau (* December 15, 1853 in Amstetten, Lower Austria, † December 25, 1928 in Vienna ) was an Austrian art historian, musicologist and Beethoven scholar.

Biography

Frimmel attended high school in Vienna, studied medicine and then in 1879 a doctorate to the Dr. med. From autumn 1881 until May 1883 he worked at the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. Subsequently, he was from 1884 to 1893 curator of the Vienna Court Museum, later Director of the Gallery of Count Schönborn- Wiesentheid and lecturer at the Vienna Athenaeum. Permanent importance are his Beethoven research. Frimmel was one of the last who could ask even contemporaries of the composer. His estate, including numerous letters, is now in the Beethoven House in Bonn.

In 1940 in Vienna Dobling ( 19th district ) was named the Frimmelgasse after him.
