Theodor von Holst

Theodor Richard Edward von Holst ( born September 3, 1810 in London, † February 14, 1844 ) was a representative of Romantic painting in England.

He was a student of Henry Fuseli and attended the Royal Academy of Arts. The painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti saw him as a precursor of the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1841 he married Amelia Thomasina Symmes Villard. In 1844 he died of a disease of the liver. The composer Gustav Holst was his great-nephew.

The vast number of his drawings and paintings address characters and scenes from famous literary works. His most famous painting " The Bride" ( "The Bride" ) painted by the painter in three versions. The painting " desire " Rossetti served as the basis for a poem. During his lifetime, his work indeed was recognized by his fellow painters, but not in the wider London public.
