Theodor Zwinger

Theodor Zwinger the Elder ( also Theodore Zwinger or Theodoro Zuingero; born August 2, 1533 Basel, † March 10, 1588 ) was a Swiss scholar.

Life

Kennel was the son of the furrier Leonhard kennel and Christine Herbster, a sister of the printer Johannes Oporinus that the professor Conrad Lycosthenes married his second wife. He studied from 1548 at the University of Basel and then in France (where he came into contact with Peter Ramus ) and in Italy ( where he received his doctorate in 1559 at the University of Padua in Girolamo Mercuriale Doctor of Medicine ). In the same year returned to Basel, he practiced as a doctor first, received in 1565 a professorship in Greek and in 1571 for ethics. From 1580 he was professor of theoretical medicine. 1565 and 1572 he served as rector of the University of Basel.

Kennel was one of the first university scholar who took up the works of Paracelsus. He was attacked about it, but was able to build a circle of Paracelsists in Basel. Among his pupils were Heinrich and Johann Arndt Khunrath.

Kennel is editor of the Encyclopedia Theatrum Humanae Vitae ( 1565, 1571, 1586, 1604). He was able to use when creating the Theatrum on the knowledge base of his stepfather Conrad Lycosthenes. His Methodus Apodemica of 1577 is the foundation of a travel art according to the principles of ramistischen Topik.

Kennel son, Jacob Zwinger, the Theatrum continued for a short time. From him the priest and theology professor Theodor Zwinger comes from the Younger ( 1597-1654 ).
