Theodore Arthur Burrows

Theodore Arthur Burrows ( born August 15, 1857 in Ottawa, † January 18, 1929 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian politician and businessman. From 1904 to 1908 he was a member of the House from 1926 until his death, Vice Governor of the province of Manitoba.

Biography

After attending school in Ottawa Burrows moved to Winnipeg in 1875 to work as a land surveyor. Two years later he joined the Chambers of Frederick Mackenzie, and was thus the first law student in the province. But in 1879 he gave up his legal career and rose instead into the wood processing business. As a result, he acquired numerous woodlots to Dauphin and soon his company was one of the largest in the province.

1892 Burrows ran in the legislative elections of Manitoba and won the constituency Dauphin. 1896 and 1899 he was re-elected each. He used his political influence to procure his company benefits. Also contributed to the fact that his sister was married to the Canadian Minister of the Interior Clifford Sifton. From 1896 to 1904 Burrows was responsible in the service of the Canadian Northern Railway for the parcelling emerging along railway lines and was able to extend its influence further. In 1908, he was the most important forest owners in western Canada.

Burrows joined on the part of the Liberal Party at the general election in 1904 and was chosen for lack of opposition candidates by acclamation. In the following four years he supported the government of Wilfrid Laurier. He promoted the development of the West, the construction of the Hudson Bay Railway and the expansion of the provincial boundaries northward. The conservative opposition accused him incessantly corruption. While the Liberals won the general election in 1908, Burrows was voted out.

As a result, Burrows retired from politics and devoted himself to the consolidation and expansion of his company. Governor General Lord Willingdon sworn him on 9 October 1926 as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. This representative office he held until his death. The appointment was made ​​on the basis of the influence which his brother Clifford Sifton had applied to the federal government.
